What Beyonce Can Teach Us About Branding

Beyonce's visually stunning Lemonade teaches us that the best part of telling your brand story is communicating it with authenticity and genuineness .


Unless you live under a rock, you've probably know that a little more than a week ago, the Queen Bey once again dropped a musical masterpiece entitled Lemonade. If you haven't yet seen it, do yourself a favor and download it on iTunes.  

Beyonce's visual album is challenging and beautiful. There are so many different layers to each song and each visual shot that it's a lot to unwrap. However, one of the greatest things I took away from Lemonade was that relationships and girl power and career- it's all complicated. Nothing's ever black and white. Beyonce's perseverance and ability to rise from the ashes stronger than ever inspired me to work hard this week and make magic happen.

I think we can feel like this often when we try to create a comprehensive brand. We feel like there are so many elements to our message- our mission, our passion, our audience's needs. It's a lot to roll into one neat package. 

What ties all of these elements together? Vulnerability. Beyonce's visually stunning Lemonade teaches us that the best part of telling your brand story is telling it with authenticity and genuineness. Lemonade is a story of Beyonce's personal struggle with her husband's infidelity. Although we as business owners don't have to share quite as personally in our professional life, but Beyonce's example does show us that the best way to connect with others, is through sharing our own struggles, vulnerabilities and goals. As brands, we don't have to pretend to be perfect. Of course we wan to be professional, but allowing room for imperfections, always creates a more personal brand.
