Social media can add value to a business that leverages it the “right” way. Social media drives web traffic, creates connections, increases brand visibility and loyalty, and provides an opportunity to convert followers into customers. For a business to see and feel the advantages of social media, it must understand how to use it in a way that benefits the business and customers. Here are four easy ways to use social media so that it’s most effective.
Have a plan and be intentional.
Having a plan for social media will provide clarity around how the business will use social platforms, the tools needed to be successful in this endeavor, and identify the desired outcome from social media. The plan should include no more than three specific, measurable, achievable, realistic, and timely (SMART) goals with tactics (an action that helps meet the goal) that align to business objectives. To track the overall progress of the plan, jot down the current social media statistics like current number of follower by platform. Remember to keep the plan simple.
Be human and authentic.
Being genuine and human are two important factors attributed to social media gone right. Research shows that people prefer to engage with brands on social media that are real, responsive and exhibit personality. This means using a persona and tone unique to the business that is also integrated within social media post. The persona will make the social media interactions stand out from competitors. Wendy’s, Staples, and Sephora are good examples of businesses who do this well. The more human and authentic the persona, the better the connection to the right people resulting in a legitimate relationship between the business and new and current customers.
Meet your people where they are.
Do you know how many social networks exist – more than 17 and per Brand Watch, internet users have an average of 5.54 social media accounts. Businesses must figure out where their target audience is hanging and engaging, and focus the social media energy on 1-2 specific networks. Facebook may not be the right place for your business depending on the business and or audience. To find the best networks for your customers, use a free survey tool like Survey Monkey or Google Forms and ask customers which platforms they use and why. The results from this survey should determine the best networks for the target audience saving time and money.
Social media isn’t going away anytime soon and will continue to be used as a digital marketing tool by businesses. For social media to work in a way that best helps elevate any business, be confident about why and how you will use it, know which platform works best for your customers, and be authentically personable. Together, this combination will lead your social media efforts in the right direction.
Thank you so much for sharing, Jasmine!
