As a creative entrepreneur, you’re creatinga LOT of content in a lot of different places. It’s not easy to curate an Instagram feed, share compelling blog posts, maintain your presence on a Facebook page, and keep up with Pinterest (and more) while you’re still trying to create great products and services for your clients. And even when you think you’re doing it all, you can still feel like you’re not growing.
The problem isn’t that your content isn’t good – because the knowledge you have to share is important – but that no one can find it. When you’re trying to do it all, it isn’t easy to also be consistently directing your audience to each platform so they can get the best you have to offer.
So how can you share more and reach more people without as much effort? By optimizing your website to make it easy for your audience – who already love you – to follow you on social media, you can make the most of that content.
So how can you make it easy for the people on your website to follow you? Here are some easy updates you can make today:
1. Link to your social media. If people don’t know how to find you, they probably won’t go searching. By linking to your social media on your website, you make it easy for them to find you on every platform. Put links in your website footer, blog sidebar, and on your contact page. You can even include links in the box that pops up after they subscribe to your newsletter or contact you via a form. And it’s not just enough to share those links – make sure you’re telling people to follow you so they can learn more about who you are and what you do.
2. Include your Instagram feed. If you’re working hard to curate a visually compelling Instagram feed, you should be taking advantage of it. Link your feed to your website so people can actually see your most recent posts. And, since your images will be on brand – or at least they should be – they will make your website even more appealing to your dream client.
3. Create content people can share easily. When people read or see something they like, they want to share it with their friends. But they won’t spend a lot of time sharing if it isn’t quick and easy. Pull out quotes from blog posts that are easy to tweet and create Pinterest-friendly graphics that already have a caption that describes your post so when your audience wants to share, they don’t even have to think about what to write.
4. Use share buttons. Many blogs already have share buttons built in to make it easy for readers to share a post, so check to make sure those are turned on for your blog. Then, if possible, include a Pin It button on your website so all your images are easily to share on Pinterest . You can also use a plug-in like Add This to connect with a variety of social platforms through buttons that move with your readers.
5. Ask people to follow and share. This step is easy to overlook, but it’s a really simple way to take your audience from your website to your social media. All you have to do is ask them to follow you and share your content. Since the people on your website are already interested in your content and the value you’re providing, give them an easy way to support you.
Bonus Tip: Update your website description and social sharing image. You know when you type in a URL on Facebook and the image that pops up doesn’t fit the page? Avoid that. By setting your social sharing image and your website description, you can make sure that when someone shares your website address, the information they see actually fits your brand. (In Squarespace you can do this under Settings > Basic Information).
Now that you know a few ways to optimize your website to make it easier for your audience to follow you on social media, I encourage you to make sure that you’re employing all of these in a variety of places on your website. And don’t worry – as long as you don’t have flashing arrows pointing to your links, no one is going to be turned off by you helping them get more great content from you.
